Lakes District Health Board Rotorua and Taupo Hospitals Redevelopment

Project Manager: Chris Hoskins
Project Owner: Lakes DHB
Constructor: Mainzeal
Construction Period: September 2009 to 2012
Project Status: Under construction

Rotorua Hospital is located on Pukeroa Hill, situated between the city centre and Rotorua lake front. A number of the existing ward blocks are between 50-60 years old, and while considerable work has been done to upgrade them, the buildings are dated in appearance and design, and are not suited to current ambulatory models of care or modern ward configuration.

The redevelopment of Rotorua Hospital is due to start in September/October 2009, through until 2011. At that stage, the redevelopment of Taupo Hospital is scheduled to proceed. The LHSIP redevelopment of the two hospitals will start at Rotorua Hospital with:

  • Extension and upgrading of the Emergency Department.
  • Construction of a three story new inpatient building comprising ambulatory (outpatient) services located on the ground floor, a surgical/medical floor on level 1 and a new ICU/CCU ward area on level 2.
  • Complete redevelopment of theatres and associated support services in the existing Clinical Services Block (CSB) building including the relocation of CSSD to level 3 from its current location on level 2.
  • Progressive redevelopment of the existing CSB building.
  • Significant upgrade of existing infrastructure services including air conditioning.

The Taupo Hospital upgrade will follow the Rotorua work and will see the ED moved to new area, co-located with Assessment, Treatment and Rehabilitation, and the construction of a new maternity area.

Current timelines for the work (as at April 2009) are:

  • March-June 2009 Detailed Design for main LHSIP project.
  • April 2009 Resource consent application lodged for full Rotorua site redevelopment.
  • July-August 2009 Tender pricing for Rotorua Hospital redevelopment.
  • July-August 2009 Building consent application for Rotorua Hospital redevelopment lodged.
  • September 2009 Construction on Rotorua Hospital redevelopment starts.
  • Late 2010 New ED ready for use.
  • 2011 New Inpatient Building ready.
  • 2011-12 Taupo Hospital redevelopment begins
